I’m posting this letter sent to survivors, hoping that someone will read it and help me locate other Andrea Doria survivors. I’m thanking you in advance for any assistance.
Project: Gatekeeper of Survivor Stories
As you know, for the 50th anniversary of our survival, I published Alive in the Andrea Doria! The Greatest Sea Rescue in History and L’ultima notte dell’Andrea Doria. It was the beginning of my work to create our legacy for humanity. I felt then, as I do now, that our stories of courage and heroism must remain intact. Moreover, the Andrea Doria story, which became infamous due to its many injustices: prejudice, greed, cover-ups, etc., must be a lesson for all.
I am taking on the initiative to collect as many of your stories as possible. Your voices serve as testimony to the miracles of the human condition. They are a message to future generations. Here some the ways in which they may be shared: newsletters, blogs, radio, TV, articles, podcasts, website posting, and hopefully a movie. For now, I am simply collecting as much data as I can. Each month, you’ll receive a newsletter with at least one featured survivor. Features will be published based on the order I receive your information. You’ll assist me greatly by returning the questionnaire attached by the end of June.
Finally, if you should happen to have contact information for other survivors and/or families of the Andrea Doria’s fatalities, would you kindly send it along to me? Thank you.
Many blessings and gratitude for your participation,
Pierette Domenica Simpson
