Fact or legend: the captain must be the last onboard a doomed ship

This article reveals what has been established in literature and in real life.  Worth the read  in light of the Costa Concordia tragedy.

As an Andrea Doria  author and survivor, I can attest,  through in-depth research  that Capt. Calamai  had to be persuaded by his officers to abandon the ship.  He finally succumbed  when his officers threatened to climb up the rope again and die with him.  Realizing that he was putting their life in danger,  he finally said, “OK,  I will come down.”

That’s what’s called “honor, valor and  responsibility”.
