Piracy continues to be a hot topic in the news, and I find myself engulfed in the on-going saga. Somalian pirates have made good on their word to pirate more ships and take more crew members hostage in an effort to retaliate for the shooting deaths of three pirates who held U.S. Captain Phillips for ransom.

After my experience on the Andrea Doria, safety at sea is my passion. In light of recent events, I find myself wondering how the safety of cruise line passengers can be increased against the threat of piracy. Just this week, Carnival cruise lines announced they are working to ensure cruise passenger safety.  While Howard Frank, Carnival’s Chief Operating Officer, did not provide specific details, he did indicate Carnival is working with British, American, and other allied forces to address this issue. In related news, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton summarized a four-point strategic plan aimed at reducing the piracy rampage. One of her points supports the use of armed weapons on board ships.

However, since 2007, U.S. officials have suspected al-Qaida of having operations based in Somalia. Recent speculation has also questioned al-Qaida’s involvement in piracy. It gets complicated, doesn’t it?

Pirates are getting bolder and expanding their regions, focusing on capturing larger ships to use as bases of operation. This allows them better opportunities to sneak up on unsuspecting vessels with their skiffs and speed boats. The number of reported incidents this year is seventy-eight so far; at least seventeen ships are currently being held for ransom with as many as 300 crew members aboard.

The piracy problem does not seem to be one likely to disappear on its own—or any time soon. President Obama has vowed to take action toward reducing piracy. He has not yet indicated how he might do that, but I hope he and his team can brainstorm some type of as-yet-untried solution. Life is precious, and we need to do everything we can to aid in the safety of crews and passengers on all sea-going vessels.

Final Weeks of Spring Break Season: Time to Review Water and Boating Safety

As the last round of Spring Breakers prepare to head out to their various destinations, it is a good time to remind warm-weather revelers of safety guidelines while in and on the water. Keep those you care about safe by reviewing and discussing the following precautions.

·         NEVER COMBINE ALCOHOL AND WATER ACTIVITIES. This is a dangerous combination, no matter what the scenario. Boat owners need to be sober to properly operate their vehicles. Swimmers and boat passengers need to remain sober in order to think and react clearly and quickly, should something unexpected happen in the water. Unfortunately, this fishing tale had a tragic ending. A few simple and inexpensive changes in boating safety requirements could have meant the difference between life and death for Marquis and his two friends—and could save countless lives in the future.

Boating Safety and the Credit Crisis

As the boating season is just around the corner (or the dock), I wish to raise awareness in boating safety.

Boating safety and the current credit crisis may seem unrelated, but recent indicators may predict a rise in boating accidents due to cut-backs forced by growing financial challenges. An article appearing in the January 29th, 2009 edition of Lloyd’s List reports that 71% of its readers expect the credit crisis to negatively affect recently improved shipping safety. Based on reactions to recessions in the past, it is expected that shipping companies will reduce crew and maintenance spending. These cuts mean less manpower, less training, and less repairs, which translate to increased safety risk.

Commercial shipping is not the only area the maritime world can expect to see affected. According to the United States Coast Guard’s (USTCG) Recreational Boating Statistics 2007, boating-related deaths dropped slightly from 2006 totals, but non-fatal injuries, accidents and damages increased. If expected trends in shipping safety translate equally into recreational boating, the current financial crisis could affect things such as boating repairs and lifejacket purchases. In 2007, 476 boating fatalities were due to drowning. Of these numbers, only 49 victims were reportedly wearing life jackets. If recreational boaters cut costs by failing to replace worn out or damaged lifejackets or increase the number of lifejackets needed on their vessels, certainly more injuries, if not fatalities, could result.

Another under-realized effect of the current economic crisis is possible increased alcohol consumption, which has the potential to affect both the commercial and recreational boating industries. It has long been known that recreational drinking and boating go hand-in-hand. With the current credit crisis putting additional financial stress on many families, it is certainly possible there will be an increase in the number of boat operators consuming alcohol and getting behind the wheel of their watercraft. This has long been a difficult challenge to police; county and state agencies have a minimal number of officers and boats, and a vast number of waterways, to patrol.

Clearly, as the credit crisis builds, the boating and shipping industries could see increased challenges to boating and shipping safety. Local, state, national, and international water safety experts, regulators, and organizations need to stress the importance of responsible water vessel maintenance and operation. GREAT LAKES SHIPWRECK FESTIVAL

It was a windy and chilly Saturday on February 28, 2009. What else would keep shipwreck enthusiasts indoors but a shipwreck festival! Everyone who met at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan, was there to share shipwreck sagas.  Some were presenters, others vendors, but most of us just wanted to mingle and share in the mysteries of the deep.

The one-day event was presented by The Ford Seahorses Scuba Diving Club in cooperation with the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. They organized an interesting program, divided into three topics: Great Lakes, Dive the World, Information/Education. I attended four sessions in the first two categories, since I wasn’t there to gather information on the technicalities of diving.

Being Vested in a Lifevest

Since acquiring an Andrea Doria life jacket from fellow survivor Joe Griffith, I feel only an honor and a privilege, rather than a right. I’ve been yearning for one ever since attending the 50th survivors’ reunion; Robert McDonald brought his along and I donned it for picture taking.

Now I have my own; I’m thrilled! The life vest is like my emblem—I feel like life’s ultimate survivor in so many ways: surviving a childhood without parents, tuberculosis, a catastrophe at sea, a dysfunctional family, poverty during college, the death of a spouse at 33, and a divorce at 51, among other trials.  I’m not lamenting, but rather flaunting my resilience…I think.

But more importantly, I wanted the vest because it symbolizes an important part of my past, of which I had nothing except yellowed newspaper articles. People just didn’t think about keeping the memory alive while in a state of trauma: my mother immediately threw away the outfit I was wearing that fateful night of July 25-26. “It was covered with oil stains,” she explained to me recently.

And to think that this beautiful piece of memorabilia was almost lost a few times. Joe explained that as a 17-year-old, he had the forethought to keep his vest on, while other survivors removed theirs and threw them onto a pile at a New York pier. More recently, he had gifted it to a historical museum that had the gall to lose it. In an email, Joe explained:

“As related to you earlier, these items, including the life-jacket, were lost in a

plutocratic mess-up. It was only by contacting a local TV station, KFOR thatthe items were found and returned to me.”

When Joe’s life jacket arrived from Oklahoma, I opened the box hesitantly, not knowing how I would feel. It was eerie seeing the faded, oil-stained ‘treasure’ with its identification still visible:

The U. S. Airways rescue is a vivid reminder of teamwork carried out on the Andrea Doria. The Captain, the crew, and passengers of every class became both rescues and survivors. The crewmembers I interviewed refused to be called heroes; they claimed that they simply get their duty. The rescue vessels that rushed to our inclined liner also responded with a sense of duty.

I echo President Obama’s comment about the US Airways rescue: “wouldn’t it be great if everybody just did their duty?”—and did it with good conscience, I might add.
